    Q: I am trying to understand the sense in which you use the term "tritone sub" when inserting B7(13) between Fm7 and Bbm7. This isn't a standard tritone sub, right? Can you explain that one? If you have another vid that explains that, I'd be happy to see a link.

  3. The leading top note comp melody
    actually is a chord melody, just not the melody of the tune being played. I looped a comp melody
    and then played the tunes melody
    The two were in the same register
    and sometimes fought each other.
    I see it more as an ensemble setting. Walking bass shell cords
    seem to stay out of each other’s way in a duo setting. Just a thought. As always great lesson

  4. this whole video reminds me of when i learned that the altered scale goes over a 7#9 chord in high school. i tried playing it over foxey lady and that's when me and my bandmates started calling it the all-turd scale.

  5. Your lessons are the most concise and well structured on YouTube. I wish you'd been around 30 years ago when I first started playing.

    My question: have you got advice for comping in a duet with a singer? I'd love it if you could put a video together but I'd really appreciate any response? How important are the root notes?

  6. This is a cool video and something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.
    I’ll take a dominant chord, find where I can play it inversions included. If I’m trying to make it a #5 #9 for example, I’ll sharpen the 5 and move the root up to the #9 making it rootless. Am I in the right ball park looking at it that way? It just seems so much easier.
